Hey y’all — Happy New Year!
I wanted to kick things off with a quick shooting breakdown I posted inside my community earlier today, because I think this is one of the most overlooked parts of shooting…
Timing your release.
I was out early this morning getting some reps in — probably around 100 shots — and the only focus was this:
When does the ball actually come out of my stick?
Most players think about power…
Most players think about accuracy…
But very few players think about the timing of the wrist snap and release.
And the truth is… there are tons of different release styles.
You can have:
• Quick releases — great when the goalie is still moving and you want to beat them backside
• Slower releases — great when you’re loading up to generate more power and velocity
All of these decisions happen in milliseconds — and if you never train them, you’re just hoping your release “figures itself out.”
That’s not what high-level players do.
Where Power Actually Comes From
There are two major power sources in your shot:
1️⃣ Your weight shift — that crow hop or front-leg step like a pitcher
2️⃣ Your rotation — hips, core, shoulders, upper body
Those two things need to work together.
When you find the sweet spot between them — for your body — that’s when your shot becomes way more consistent.
Why It Gets Harder When You Add a Pass
Shooting off the cradle?
Much easier — because the ball is already sitting in your “sweet spot.”
Shooting off a catch?
Now the ball is moving in your stick…
It’s not always in the sweet spot…
And your timing has to adjust on the fly.
That’s where real training happens. That’s where players separate themselves.
I broke this down inside the community with examples of:
• When my release was early vs late
• What happened when I rotated too much
• How timing changed my accuracy
These are mission-critical skills for shooters — field or box. And the more you understand how your release actually works, the more confident and consistent you become.
If you want deeper breakdowns like this, real-time coaching, and a community of players learning this stuff together… you’ll love what we’re building.
