Hello Coaches & Families,

This fall we’re adding a High School Box Lacrosse League into our programming, and I wanted to briefly touch on why I believe box lacrosse is so important for athletes to play.

Box lacrosse is played in tighter spaces, with smaller goals, and at a faster pace. That environment naturally builds players who are more skilled with their sticks, better at handling pressure, and more confident around the net.

My own journey with box lacrosse began when I was 20 years old. I had the opportunity to live in Canada and play for the historic Clarington Green Gales under Coach Jason Crosbie, who spent nearly a decade competing in the National Lacrosse League (professional box lacrosse league)

When I came back to field lacrosse, the game looked very different to me. Three things changed right away:

  1. Dodging & Offensive Setup – I learned to start my dodges from better angles, always working to get to my strong hand where the net looked biggest.

  2. Stick Skills Under Pressure – Box forced me to catch and move the ball with defenders all over me. When I came back to the field, everything felt easier.

  3. Finishing Efficiency – Going from a 4x4 box goal to a 6x6 field goal made scoring feel so much more natural.

But perhaps the biggest impact of box lacrosse on today’s field game is the pass-first mentality.

In field lacrosse, passing depends on spacing, matchups, or where the advantage lies. But in box lacrosse, you have to pass. Defenders can cross-check with and without the ball, making it much harder to beat your man 1-on-1. The ball must move freely to keep the defense shifting and opening up space.

Passing also becomes critical against elite goalies. With their size, equipment, and angles, it’s rare to beat them clean. But when the ball moves and the goalie is forced to reset, shooters can score before the goalie fully sets his position — a massive advantage in tight.
